Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in Westlake, OH
Is Parenting Starting to Feel Harder Than You Expected?
If you are a parent feeling overwhelmed by your child’s tantrums, defiance, or aggression, you’re not alone. Many parents begin parenthood excited and confident, only to find themselves wondering:
Am I doing something wrong?
Why won't my child listen?
Are these years supposed to be this hard?
You may have read parenting books, searched online for advice, or tried countless strategies. Instead of finding answers, you may have ended up feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or even ashamed.
The good news is that you do not have to figure this out on your own.
Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is one of the most effective treatments available for young children with behavioral and emotional challenges. It gives parents practical tools that create lasting change while strengthening the parent-child relationship.
PCIT for Families in Westlake and the Greater Cleveland Area
My office is conveniently located in Westlake, Ohio, and I work with families throughout the west side of Cleveland, including Bay Village, Rocky River, Avon, Avon Lake, North Olmsted, Lakewood, and the surrounding communities.
If your young child is struggling with tantrums, aggression, defiance, or other challenging behaviors, PCIT offers an evidence-based approach that helps parents build confidence while creating lasting improvements in their child's behavior and your relationship together.
What is Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)?
Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment designed for children ages 3 to 7 who are experiencing emotional or behavioral difficulties.
Rather than simply teaching parenting strategies, PCIT provides live coaching while you interact with your child. During sessions, I observe your interactions and coach you in real time, helping you practice skills as they happen.
This hands-on approach helps parents feel more confident because they receive immediate feedback and support instead of trying to apply techniques later at home.
PCIT helps children learn to:
Follow directions
Listen more consistently
Accept limits and consequences
Improve emotional regulation
Reduce challenging behaviors
Build stronger, healthier relationships with their caregivers
PCIT has been extensively researched for decades and is considered the gold standard treatment for many early childhood behavioral concerns.
Who can benefit from PCIT?
PCIT is highly effective for children who struggle with
Frequent temper tantrums
Defiance or refusing to follow directions
Verbal and/or physical aggression
Destroying toys or belongings
Backtalk or disrespect toward adults
Excessive whining or crying
Hyperactivity
Interrupting others
Difficulty paying attention
Behavioral concerns at preschool, daycare, or school
Difficulty managing big emotions
How PCIT Strengthens the Parent-Child Relationship
While many parenting approaches focus primarily on stopping unwanted behaviors, PCIT also focuses on strengthening your relationship with your child.
During treatment, parents learn skills that increase warmth, connection, and positive communication. As your child experiences more positive interactions, they naturally become more cooperative and responsive.
Over time, many families notice:
Fewer power struggles
Less yelling and frustration
Increased cooperation
Greater confidence in parenting
Stronger emotional connection
More enjoyable family time
PCIT helps with behavior but it has an even more ambitious goal which is to help families enjoy spending time with each other and to create a calmer, more enjoyable relationship.
What If My Child Is Older Than 7?
Although traditional PCIT is designed for children ages 3 to 7, I continue using evidence-based strategies with older children.
Ages 8 to 10
For children between 8 and 10, I often use a modified version of PCIT that is tailored to their developmental level while maintaining the same focus on strengthening the parent-child relationship and improving behavior.
Ages 11 and Older
For parents of older children and teenagers, I use the Kazdin Parent Management Training (K-PMT) program.
K-PMT is a structured, evidence-based parenting program developed by Dr. Alan Kazdin. It helps parents understand how everyday interactions influence behavior and teaches practical strategies for increasing positive behaviors while reducing challenging ones.
Parents learn how to:
Encourage cooperation
Reduce arguing and defiance
Increase responsibility
Improve communication
Respond consistently and effectively to difficult behaviors
Like PCIT, K-PMT focuses on building positive relationships while creating lasting behavior change.
What to Expect
Parenting a child with challenging behaviors can feel exhausting, but with the right support, children can learn new skills, parents can regain confidence, and families can enjoy being together again.
I know it can feel like a big step to reach out to a psychologist but I try to make it easy. We’ll spend 15-minutes on the phone and I’ll let you know if I think PCIT or K-PMT will be a good fit for your family. If it’s not, I’ll do my best to get you to the right person.
